Compression Stockings in Summer – and Why Flat-Knit Matters for Lipedema

Summer, sunshine and light clothing – for many, this is the definition of freedom. For women living with lipedema, however, the warmer months often bring particular challenges. Compression stockings are a vital part of conservative treatment, supporting lymph flow and reducing swelling. Yet even in skin-colored versions, the thick-knit fabric can feel conspicuous under summer outfits and uncomfortable in the heat. Many women find themselves searching for alternatives so they can enjoy the season.

One long-term option is lipedema liposuction, in which the diseased fatty tissue is permanently removed, eventually reducing or eliminating the need for medical compression stockings. Even so, compression remains an important part of holistic lipedema management – particularly before surgery or during the healing phase afterwards. This is equally important if surgery is still some way off.

This article explains why flat-knit compression works, where its limits lie, and how it compares with other treatments.

What Do Compression Stockings Do for Lipedema?

Compression stockings work by applying controlled pressure to the tissue, producing several beneficial effects. They promote lymphatic drainage and help reduce swelling by relieving tissue pressure. The even compression can also ease pain and feelings of tightness in the legs. Tissue pressure in the legs is typically greatest in the lower areas, and compression helps to counteract this. During movement, the mechanical pressure acts in a similar way to manual lymphatic drainage.

Improved circulation delivers more oxygen and nutrients to the tissue, supporting both general wellbeing and recovery. Compression stockings can also help prevent the skin changes and damage that can result from chronic swelling.

Advantages of Compression in Summer

Wearing compression on hot days presents additional challenges, but also offers real benefits. In higher temperatures, the body tends to retain more fluid. Compression helps manage this additional water retention and prevents swelling from worsening. The therapeutic benefit of compression remains fully effective in summer, and consistent wear helps keep lipedema symptoms under control.

Many people are also more physically active during the warmer months. Compression supports the legs during movement and helps women stay mobile even at higher temperatures. Blood vessels can begin to dilate at temperatures as low as 25 degrees Celsius, which can intensify symptoms. Compression pressure counteracts this process and provides relief.

Which Compression Stockings Are Best for Lipedema?

Flat-knit compression stockings are the recommended choice for lipedema. They are manufactured on flat-bed knitting machines and then sewn together with a visible seam. This construction allows them to be individually adjusted to your exact measurements, providing an optimal fit with even pressure distribution. They are less prone to wrinkling and creating pressure points, and they accommodate the irregular contours typical of lipedema at all stages.

Flat Knit vs Round Knit: What’s the Difference?

While venous disorders are often managed with round-knit compression, flat-knit is the standard for lipedema. The flat-knit technique allows precise adjustment to individual body measurements, even in complex cases. Flat-knit garments also offer lower resting pressure when sitting or lying down and increased working pressure when the muscles are active – during walking, cycling, or running, for example.

Round-knit stockings are manufactured seamlessly and are available in standard clothing sizes. While some degree of customization is possible, it is limited by the manufacturing process. For lipedema, round-knit garments can roll at the edges and constrict tissue, making them less suitable.

At LIPOCURA®, we recommend flat-knit compression for all lipedema patients.

Why All Seams Should Face Outwards

With flat-knit compression, all seams should ideally be positioned on the outside. This avoids pressure points in sensitive areas such as the back of the knee and inner thighs. Seams at the back can also cause discomfort when sitting or lying down. External seams are less prone to wear from friction, making the garment more durable and cost-effective.

Tips for Wearing Compression in Summer

The warmer months present particular challenges. High temperatures can make compression garments harder to tolerate. A few practical tips can help.

Put your stockings on during the cooler morning hours. Choose lighter colors that absorb less heat. Use cooling sprays or gels on your legs. Stay well hydrated to keep the skin in good condition. When spending extended time outdoors, plan regular breaks in shaded or air-conditioned spaces. Use donning aids and rubber gloves to help get the stockings on smoothly and without damaging the fabric.

Compression on Holiday

If you are traveling by car, train, or plane, there are a few additional considerations. Take regular breaks to move your legs. Continue wearing your stockings while traveling to benefit from their effects throughout your trip. Clean your stockings regularly while away to maintain hygiene and function.

Can I Get Compression Stockings on the NHS?

In the UK, compression stockings can be prescribed by your GP or through an NHS lymphoedema service if there is a medical need. It is also advisable to have a spare pair to maintain hygiene standards. Availability varies by region, and custom flat-knit garments may require a referral to a specialist lymphoedema clinic.

Private purchase gives you more choice and speed.

What Types of Flat-Knit Compression Are Available?

Compression stockings come in different strengths, prescribed by your specialist according to diagnosis. Pressure is measured in millimeters of mercury (mmHg): light (18 to 21 mmHg), medium (23 to 32 mmHg), strong (34 to 46 mmHg), and very strong (from 49 mmHg). They are made from elastic textile fabric and exert controlled pressure that promotes circulation while reducing pain and swelling.

Flat Knit Compression After Liposuction

Following liposuction, you will wear a specially made compression garment for approximately six to eight weeks. It is only removed for washing, showering, or manual lymphatic drainage. After this initial period, you can transition to flat-knit compression stockings and continue wearing compression for several months until healing is complete.

Conservative Treatment for Lipedema

Alongside compression, several conservative approaches can alleviate lipedema symptoms and support quality of life. Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) is a specific massage technique designed to improve lymph flow and reduce swelling. Exercise therapy through regular, targeted activity helps pump fluid effectively through the venous and lymphatic systems. Joint-friendly activities such as swimming, cycling, aqua fitness, Nordic walking, yoga, and Pilates are particularly recommended.

Nutrition also plays a role. A balanced, anti-inflammatory diet rich in fruit, vegetables, healthy fats, and lean protein can help reduce inflammation and improve general well-being. Reducing sugar and processed foods may also be beneficial.

A comprehensive treatment plan that combines several of these approaches is often the most effective strategy.

Surgical Treatment of Lipedema

Surgical treatment through liposuction can offer substantial benefits. Many patients report significant pain relief following the procedure, as the excess fatty tissue pressing on nerves is removed. By removing the pathological tissue, lymphatic flow can improve and swelling is reduced. Mobility often increases considerably, and the body’s silhouette appears more harmonious, which can meaningfully boost confidence. Unlike conservative measures that must be continued indefinitely, liposuction frequently delivers long-lasting improvement. Once removed, the fat typically does not regenerate in the treated area.

Conclusion: Lasting Results Through Specialist Treatment

Wearing compression stockings, alongside supporting measures such as exercise, lymphatic drainage, and a balanced diet, remains a proven approach to managing lipedema. Based on more than 15 years of experience with lipedema patients, we know that lasting improvement is ultimately achieved through liposuction.
