For many women living with lipedema, liposuction offers a lasting solution. The procedure permanently removes the pathologically altered fat cells, bringing meaningful relief to daily life. But a common question remains: does it always require general anesthesia, or are there other options?
One of the most common concerns we hear from patients is about the anesthesia itself. Will I be asleep? Will I feel anything? Is it safe? These are completely normal questions, and the answers may assure you.

General anesthesia places the patient into a state of controlled deep sleep. Unlike local anesthesia or sedation, the patient is fully unconscious and mechanically ventilated throughout, under the supervision of a specialist anesthesiologist. This form of anesthesia is typically chosen for more complex or extensive surgical procedures, while smaller interventions can often be carried out under local anesthesia.
The key advantages of general anesthesia include complete elimination of stress and discomfort for the patient, and the ability for the surgeon to carry out longer, more thorough procedures. Throughout the operation, the patient’s vital signs are continuously monitored, ensuring a high level of safety.
For procedures involving smaller volumes of fat, local anesthesia may be an option depending on the patient’s medical history and the clinical situation. This is more commonly the case with cosmetic liposuction, where only a limited area – such as a small pocket of fat on the abdomen – is being treated.
However, there is an important distinction between cosmetic liposuction and liposuction for lipedema. In lipedema surgery, the volume of tissue removed is typically far greater than in a cosmetic procedure. For this reason, local anesthesia is generally not recommended for lipedema liposuction.
The surgeons at LIPOCURA® are specialists in lipedema liposuction, with extensive experience in this field. We carry out lipedema surgery exclusively under general anesthesia. This approach allows us to remove a significantly greater volume of diseased fat cells than would be feasible under local anesthesia, meaning fewer procedures overall and shorter cumulative recovery periods for our patients.
The one exception is the treatment of painful fat deposits in the face, which can be performed under local anesthesia when treated in isolation. However, when facial liposuction is combined with treatment of other body areas in the same session, general anesthesia is required.
While local anesthesia has dosage limitations that restrict how much tissue can be treated, general anesthesia under controlled hospital conditions is the safer and more effective choice for the larger treatment areas typical of lipedema surgery. Any post-operative effects such as tremors, nausea, or discomfort can be well managed with appropriate medication before and after the procedure.
At LIPOCURA® London, all procedures are performed in a CQC-registered hospital with a full anesthetic team on site throughout. Surgery typically lasts between 2 and 4 hours depending on the areas being treated. Most patients stay overnight and are discharged the following morning.
