Body Weight After Liposuction

It is only natural to step on the scales shortly after surgery. After all, several litres of tissue have been removed – it says so in the surgical report. Surely the number on the scale should reflect that.

But when you look at the result, it can come as a shock. The weight is the same as before, or sometimes even higher. How is that possible?

Frustration can set in quickly, along with thoughts about dieting or doubts about whether the surgery worked at all. But I would encourage you to interrupt that spiral and understand what is actually happening, because there are clear explanations.

The fat has been removed, and the results will become visible in time. But it is important to know that one litre of lipedema fat weighs only around 300 to 400 grams, not a full kilogram as you might assume. On top of that, wound fluid and water accumulate in the body after surgery, causing swelling. All of this leads to fluctuations on the scale, and it is entirely possible to weigh more than you did before the procedure. For some patients, it takes several months to reach a stable weight. For others, the full picture only emerges over the course of the entire recovery year. This is all perfectly normal.

Your weight should not define your happiness – not before surgery, not after, and not with or without lipedema. Through this procedure, you have reclaimed a piece of your health and regained control over your body. That is what matters most. Keep reminding yourself of that, and be proud of how far you have already come.
